Visa & Entry Rules
Overstaying your Turkish visa or exceeding the 90-day limit carries real consequences. Here's exactly what to expect and how to handle it.
Quick Answer
Overstaying in Turkey results in a fine (currently around 3,000–6,000 Turkish Lira depending on duration) and a potential entry ban of 1–5 years. You must pay the fine at the point of departure before you can leave.
The fine is calculated in Turkish Lira and is updated annually. As of 2026, expect to pay approximately 3,000–7,000 TL for short overstays (1–30 days). Longer overstays attract higher fines and increase the likelihood of an entry ban.
The fine is paid at the departure airport or border crossing before you are allowed to leave. You cannot exit Turkey with an unpaid overstay fine. Border staff will direct you to the appropriate counter.
Turkey may impose an entry ban in addition to the fine. Short overstays (under 10 days) often result in just a fine with no ban. Longer overstays can trigger bans of 1, 3, or 5 years. The immigration officer at the border has discretion here.
If you receive an entry ban, you will typically be notified at the border. The ban is entered into Turkey's immigration database. Attempting re-entry before the ban expires will result in being turned back.
Attempting to hide an overstay or use a different border crossing does not help. Turkey's entry records are computerised across all official crossings. Attempting to exit without declaring will make the situation significantly worse.
Technically yes — if you apply for an ikamet appointment before your visa expires, you are in a legal grey area while awaiting the appointment. However, if your visa has already expired and you have not applied, you are overstaying and the standard consequences apply on departure.
If you realise you are about to overstay, apply for an ikamet appointment immediately via the e-ikamet portal. The appointment booking itself does not grant legal status, but demonstrates good faith.
