Residence Permit Guide
Renewing your ikamet is similar to the initial application but with some key differences. Here's exactly when to start, what documents you need, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.
Renewal timeline
Gather all documents, check for changes in requirements since your last application.
Log into e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr and book your renewal appointment.
Turkish law allows you to apply for renewal while your current permit is still valid — appointments are typically made within this window.
If your permit expires before your appointment, you are technically in an overstay situation. Turkey does allow renewals to be filed after expiry in some circumstances but this carries risk and penalties.
Renewal process
Your ikamet card shows the expiry date (geçerlilik tarihi). Aim to begin the renewal process 60 days before this date. Applications submitted too close to expiry risk complications.
Tip: Set a calendar reminder 90 days before your permit expires so you have ample time to prepare.
Requirements for renewal are similar to initial application but not identical. Check the e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr portal for any updated requirements in your province. In particular, verify the current proof-of-funds threshold and health insurance requirements.
Tip: Requirements for renewal occasionally change. Do not assume the renewal process is identical to your original application — always verify on the official portal.
Collect all required documents including your current ikamet card, passport, renewed health insurance, updated bank statements, and current notarised rental contract (if address has changed).
Tip: If your address has not changed and your rental contract is still valid, you can typically re-use it. If your landlord has changed the contract, you will need an updated notarised version.
Log into your existing e-ikamet account and select "Renewal" (uzatma). Book an available appointment slot at your local İl Göç İdaresi. Print your appointment confirmation.
Tip: Keep the same permit category unless your circumstances have changed. Changing categories during renewal adds complexity and may require additional documentation.
Attend your appointment with all original documents and copies. Staff will review your current ikamet, collect biometrics again (fingerprints and photo), and issue an application receipt. Your current permit remains valid while the renewal is processed.
Tip: Bring your old ikamet card — you will hand it in at the appointment and receive a receipt document that serves as your temporary proof of status.
Your new ikamet card is mailed to your registered address within 4–8 weeks. You can track the application status on the e-ikamet portal.
Tip: Ensure someone is available to receive the registered mail. If the card is returned, you must collect it in person from the directorate.
Documents for renewal
The renewal checklist is largely the same as the initial application. The key additions are your existing ikamet card and updated documents (insurance, bank statements).
