How-To Guide
Your vergi numarası is the first administrative step for every expat in Turkey. Get it the same day with just your passport — here's exactly how.
Step-by-step process
You can get a Turkish tax number (vergi numarası) either by visiting a Tax Office (Vergi Dairesi) in person, or increasingly via the online İnteraktif Vergi Dairesi system. In-person is most reliable for foreigners.
Tip: Online registration is available at ivd.gib.gov.tr but may require a Turkish phone number for verification. In-person is always guaranteed to work.
Every city and district has at least one Vergi Dairesi. In Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, and other major expat cities, there are multiple offices. Use GIB.gov.tr or Google Maps to find your nearest one.
Tip: Offices are typically open Monday–Friday, 08:30–17:30. Avoid Monday mornings and end-of-month periods — they get busy.
The requirements are minimal. You need your original passport plus one photocopy of the photo page. Some offices also ask for a proof of address (your rental agreement or hotel booking) but this is not always strictly required.
Required documents
Tip: Always bring your original passport — photocopies alone are not accepted at the point of verification.
Go to the Vergi Dairesi and tell the officer you need a vergi numarası for a yabancı uyruklu (foreign national). Hand over your passport and photocopy. The process is fast — usually completed at the counter while you wait.
Tip: If language is a barrier, writing 'Vergi numarası istiyorum, yabancıyım' on a piece of paper is enough to communicate your request.
Your 10-digit tax number is issued immediately and printed on a paper slip or document. Keep this number safe — you will need it for opening a bank account, signing a lease, buying property, and many other transactions.
Tip: There is no card issued. The number itself is what matters. Screenshot or photograph the paper confirmation immediately.
Why it matters

If you're earning income in Turkey or have financial obligations, your tax number is used for all filings.
