Step-by-step

How to open your account.

01

Get your Turkish tax number first

A vergi numarası is mandatory for opening any Turkish bank account. Get this from your local Vergi Dairesi — it takes 15–30 minutes and costs nothing.

02

Choose your bank

Garanti BBVA and İş Bankası are the most expat-friendly options with English-language apps and staff. State bank Ziraat is required for some government transactions. Consider having accounts at two banks.

03

Prepare your documents

Requirements vary slightly by bank and whether you have a residence permit. At minimum, you need your passport, tax number, and a Turkish address (rental contract or utility bill).

04

Visit the branch in person

Almost all Turkish banks require in-person account opening for foreigners — online-only is not yet available for new foreign customers. Visit any branch of your chosen bank with all documents.

05

Complete the application forms

Bank staff will guide you through the forms. The process takes 30–60 minutes. You may need to answer questions about the source of funds and intended use of the account (standard KYC/AML compliance).

06

Receive your debit card and internet banking

Your debit card is typically issued the same day or mailed within 3–7 days. Internet banking setup is immediate. Most banks offer both TRY and foreign currency (EUR, USD, GBP) accounts.

Documents required

What to bring to the bank.

Requirements vary slightly by bank. Having all of these documents maximises your chances of success on the first visit. Banks are stricter about non-residents, so bring as much supporting documentation as possible.
