City Comparisons
Two of Turkey's most desirable expat cities take on very different characters. Antalya offers Mediterranean warmth and a huge retiree community; Izmir is the progressive Aegean city professionals prefer. Here's the full comparison.

Quick Answer
Antalya or Izmir — which should you choose?
Izmir is the better choice for working professionals, digital nomads, and families who want a progressive, livable Mediterranean city. Antalya wins for retirees, beach lifestyle seekers, and property investors targeting short-term rental income. Both cities cost roughly the same, but their characters are quite different.

Which city for you?
Izmir's university culture, established coworking spaces, and cooler summers make it more comfortable for full-time remote work. The intellectual energy and café culture suit those who need productivity alongside lifestyle.
Antalya's massive ready-made expat community (especially British, Scandinavian, and Russian retirees), lower costs, and year-round sunshine make it Turkey's premier retirement destination. Integration is easier.
Izmir's progressive culture, strong schools including international options, leafy residential neighbourhoods like Bornova and Buca, and its reputation as Turkey's most livable city give families a clear edge.
If your primary goal is Mediterranean beach life — Konyaaltı, Lara beach, and the Turquoise Coast — Antalya is unmatched. Izmir has beaches but they are not the same calibre.
Izmir has a real economy: the Aegean Free Trade Zone, a major port, manufacturing, and a growing tech scene. Local employment opportunities dwarf what Antalya offers beyond tourism.
Short-term rental yields in Antalya are exceptional thanks to massive tourist demand. Konyaaltı and Lara apartments generate strong Airbnb income. Izmir suits long-term buy-to-let more.
The cost difference
Antalya and Izmir are remarkably close in overall cost of living — typically within 5–10% of each other. The main difference is that Antalya tends to have slightly cheaper rents and food, while Izmir has slightly higher costs in transport and entertainment.
Both cities are dramatically cheaper than Istanbul. A comfortable single-person budget in either city runs €700–1,400/month depending on lifestyle.

FAQ
Izmir has a stronger education infrastructure and language schools. However, both cities have enough English-speaking expat services that you can survive without Turkish. Antalya's large non-Turkish expat community can actually slow language acquisition.
Both have international airports with good European connections. Antalya Airport handles more charter and package-holiday flights. Izmir Adnan Menderes is well connected to Ankara, Istanbul, and European cities. Istanbul connections are similar — about 1 hour.
Antalya has very mild, mostly dry winters (average 12–15°C). Izmir winters are slightly cooler and wetter (average 9–12°C, with rain). Both are dramatically milder than Northern Europe, but Antalya is drier and sunnier through winter.
Yes — the $400,000 USD minimum property purchase for citizenship applies equally in both cities. Antalya has more off-plan developments actively marketed to citizenship seekers. Always use a qualified property lawyer.
