From the British-community hub of Çalış to the upscale sailing village of Göcek — find the right area for your lifestyle.
Quick Answer
Where should expats live in Fethiye?
Çalış Beach for an established British expat community with English-language services. Ovacık for peaceful hillside village life near Ölüdeniz. Göcek for an upscale sailing lifestyle. Hisarönü for budget living. Each area has a distinct character — the right choice depends on your lifestyle and budget.
The heartland of Fethiye's expat community. Çalış has a long promenade, British-run pubs, English-language services, and a gentle pace of life. The water taxis across to Fethiye town run frequently and cost almost nothing.
Fethiye town gives you the full Turkish experience: the covered bazaar, fresh fish market, cafes, and a working marina. Walkable to most amenities. Best for people who want cultural immersion alongside expat comforts.
Perched above Ölüdeniz, Ovacık is lush and green. Internet is slightly slower than central Fethiye, but the scenery and tranquillity are hard to beat. Many British expats have made permanent homes here.
Hisarönü is the most affordable area near Fethiye. It has a strip of restaurants and bars that cater heavily to British tourists in summer, which some expats love and others find too busy. Very quiet in winter.
Göcek is a different world from the rest of the Fethiye area — car-free centre, luxury yachts, boutique restaurants, and a wealthy Turkish and foreign community. Prices are 50–100% higher than Çalış. Beautiful and serene.
Kayaköy is a UNESCO-listed abandoned Greek village turned modern settlement. A small community of artists, writers, and adventurous expats have settled here. Atmospheric, inexpensive, and increasingly popular.
