City Comparisons
Both sit on Turkey's Mediterranean coast 130km apart — but they offer very different experiences. Antalya is a major city with full infrastructure; Alanya is a smaller, cheaper resort town. Here's what each does better.
Quick Answer
Alanya or Antalya — which should you choose?
Antalya wins on infrastructure, healthcare, schools, and transport — it is a proper major city. Alanya wins on cost, property prices, and a relaxed small-town atmosphere. The single most important deciding factor is healthcare: if you have medical needs or are older, Antalya's vastly superior hospital network is a compelling reason to choose it over Alanya.

Critical consideration
The healthcare gap is real and important. Alanya has Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Hospital and several private clinics — adequate for routine care, GP visits, and minor procedures. However, for cardiology, oncology, complex surgery, neurology, or serious emergencies, Alanya residents need to travel to Antalya (approx. 1.5–2 hours). If you have ongoing medical needs or are older, this is a genuine consideration that should weigh heavily in your decision.
Which city for you?
Alanya is one of the cheapest Mediterranean coastal towns in Europe for comfortable retirement living. With a large Scandinavian and Northern European community, English is widely spoken and expat support networks are well established.
Alanya offers some of Turkey's most attractive rental yields (often 8–12% gross in season) at entry prices dramatically below Antalya. Off-plan developments in Mahmutlar and Oba target this market heavily.
Antalya has proper international schools, a wider selection of specialist healthcare (including paediatric specialists), and city-level infrastructure. For families with school-age children, Antalya is the clear choice.
This is perhaps the most important difference between the two cities. Antalya has major private hospitals including Antalya Medical Center, Akdeniz University Hospital, and multiple private specialist clinics. Alanya has limited provision — serious medical needs require a 2-hour drive to Antalya.
Antalya has better coworking infrastructure, faster average internet speeds, and a larger nomad community. Alanya is catching up but remains a smaller scene.
Alanya's Cleopatra Beach is compact and consistently beautiful. The smaller scale means the beach is always close, the town is walkable, and life revolves around the coast more directly than in spread-out Antalya.
The cost difference
Alanya is approximately 20–30% cheaper than Antalya for equivalent living standards. The biggest savings come from rent and property prices. A comfortable retirement budget in Alanya can be €200–400/month less than the equivalent in Antalya.
For property investors, the difference is even more striking. Alanya apartment prices start around €60,000–80,000 for a good 1BR, while equivalent Antalya properties typically start €100,000+.

Alanya is considered very safe — it consistently scores among Turkey's lowest crime rate cities. The large expat community and tourism economy have created a stable, internationally oriented environment. Petty theft in tourist areas is the main concern, as in most Mediterranean resort towns.
Gazipasa Airport (GZP) serves Alanya and handles seasonal charter flights from several Northern European cities — particularly Norway, Sweden, and Germany. However, the schedule is far more limited than Antalya Airport (AYT), which serves 100+ international destinations year-round. Most Alanya residents use Antalya Airport.
Alanya has a small number of private schools with international curriculum options, but nothing approaching the range available in Antalya. For serious international school education (IB, British curriculum, full English-medium instruction), Antalya is significantly better.
Alanya has one of Turkey's largest proportional expat populations. The community is heavily Scandinavian (particularly Norwegian and Swedish — there is a large established Norwegian community), German, Russian, and Ukrainian. British expats are present but less dominant than in Fethiye or Bodrum. The community is close-knit and well-organised.
