Quick Answer
Your foreign driving licence is valid in Turkey for 6 months from your entry date. EU licences do not require an IDP. US, Australian, and UK licences should be accompanied by an IDP. After 6 months, you must convert to a Turkish licence (requires a residence permit) or leave and re-enter Turkey.
Licence Validity by Nationality
EU / EEA countries (Germany, France, Netherlands, etc.)
EU licences are fully recognised in Turkey for the first 6 months. Photo-card licences preferred; older pink/green paper licences should bring an IDP as a precaution.
United Kingdom
UK photo-card licence is accepted. Bring an IDP (Type 1926 or 1949 from UK Post Office) as a precaution — some police checkpoints may request it post-Brexit.
United States / Canada
US state licences are accepted but an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended as a companion document. Turkish police checkpoints expect to see licences in Latin script; an IDP provides a recognised translation.
Australia / New Zealand
Australian and New Zealand licences accepted. IDP strongly recommended. AUSTROADS/NZTA provide IDPs. Some car rental companies in Turkey require an IDP for Australian licence holders.
Russia / CIS countries
Russian Cyrillic licences may cause confusion at some checkpoints. IDP or notarised translation provides clarity. Conversion process possible in Turkey.
Iran / Iraq / Syria (non-recognised)
Licences from countries without bilateral recognition may not be accepted for driving in Turkey. IDP from an internationally recognised authority required. Check current status with Turkish traffic authorities (EGM).
International Driving Permit (IDP) Guide
What is an IDP?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a multilingual translation of your driving licence issued under either the 1926 or 1949 Geneva Convention or the 1968 Vienna Convention. It is not a standalone driving document — you must carry it alongside your original driving licence at all times.
Where do I get an IDP?
IDPs are issued by authorised motoring organisations in your home country. UK: Post Office branches. USA: AAA or AATA. Australia: NRMA, RACQ, RAA, or equivalent state motoring club. Germany: ADAC. Netherlands: ANWB. Most issue IDPs on the same day for a small fee (€15–30 equivalent).
How long is an IDP valid in Turkey?
IDPs are typically valid for 1–3 years depending on issuing country. However, your right to drive in Turkey using a foreign licence is limited to 6 months from your date of entry — the IDP validity does not extend this period.
Do rental car companies require an IDP?
International rental companies (Avis, Hertz, etc.) generally accept EU licences without IDP. For US, Australian, and non-EU licences, many Turkish rental companies do require an IDP as a companion document. Check with your specific rental company before arrival.
Converting Your Licence to Turkish
Check eligibility
Turkey allows conversion of licences from countries with bilateral recognition agreements. EU, UK, US, Australian, and most Western licences qualify. You must hold a valid residence permit (ikamet) — tourist-status foreigners cannot convert.
Get your licence translated and apostilled
Have your foreign driving licence officially translated into Turkish by a sworn translator (yeminli tercüman). Some countries also require an apostille on the original licence document. Cost: ₺500–1,500 for translation.
Prepare your documents
Required documents: original foreign driving licence + translation, valid Turkish residence permit, passport, 2 biometric photos, Turkish tax number, and a completed application form (from traffic directorate). If over 60, a medical report is also required.
Visit the Traffic Registration Office (Trafik Tescil)
Go to your nearest Trafik Tescil Müdürlüğü (Traffic Registration Directorate) in person. These are located in major cities — provincial capitals. Queue early; bring originals and photocopies of all documents.
Pass the eyesight test
A basic vision test is conducted at the directorate or by a registered optician. This is a standard part of Turkish driving licence issuance for all categories.
Pay the fee and receive Turkish licence
Application fee is typically ₺600–1,200 (varies and subject to change). The Turkish driving licence (pink EU-style card format) is issued within a few weeks. Your original foreign licence may be retained or returned depending on bilateral treaty terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive in Turkey with my foreign driving licence?
Yes, for up to 6 months from your entry date. Foreign licences from most countries are recognised in Turkey under international driving conventions. EU, UK, US, Australian, Canadian, and most other Western licences are accepted. After 6 months, you must either convert to a Turkish licence (requires residence permit) or leave and re-enter to restart the clock.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Turkey?
An IDP is not strictly required for EU licence holders with a photo-card licence. However, it is strongly recommended for US, Australian, Canadian, and UK holders — and required for licences written in non-Latin alphabets (Arabic, Cyrillic, etc.). An IDP translates your licence into multiple languages and prevents confusion at police checkpoints. Always carry your original licence alongside the IDP.
How long can I drive with a foreign licence in Turkey?
Up to 6 months from the date you entered Turkey (as stamped in your passport). This is not calendar year — it is 6 months from your specific entry date. After 6 months, you are no longer legally permitted to drive on your foreign licence without converting to a Turkish licence.
Can I convert my UK/EU/US licence to a Turkish driving licence?
Yes, if you hold a valid Turkish residence permit (ikamet). Tourist-status foreigners cannot convert. The conversion process involves translation of your licence, a basic vision test, and payment of a fee at the Traffic Registration Directorate (Trafik Tescil). You keep your licence categories — if you hold a Category B (car) licence in the UK, you get Category B in Turkey.
What happens if I drive in Turkey after 6 months on a foreign licence?
Technically illegal — Turkish law requires either a Turkish licence or a foreign licence within the 6-month grace period. In practice, police traffic checkpoints often check vehicle documents more than licence validity periods, but you are exposed to a fine and potential complications if stopped. Convert your licence or perform a border run to reset the clock.
Can car rental companies in Turkey refuse my foreign licence?
Some local Turkish rental companies may have policies requiring an IDP for non-EU licences. International chains (Avis, Hertz, Enterprise) generally accept EU and most major country licences with a photo-card format. For US, Australian, or non-standard licences, bring an IDP to avoid any issues at the rental counter.
Is a driving licence from Turkey valid if I return home?
A Turkish driving licence is valid for driving in Turkey. For driving in other countries, you would need to check reciprocal recognition agreements. EU citizens returning to their home country may need to exchange their Turkish licence back to an EU-format licence. Most EU countries have processes for this.
