Quick Answer
How hot is Istanbul in summer?
Istanbul summer averages 28-30°C in July and August with 65-70% humidity — making it feel significantly hotter. Heat index (feels-like temperature) regularly reaches 34-38°C. June and September are the most comfortable summer months. AC is standard in modern apartments. The Bosphorus does not provide swimming access; beach options require 45-90 minutes of travel.

The most pleasant summer month. Warm but not overwhelming. Low humidity relative to July-August. Evenings perfect for outdoor dining. Bosphorus breeze helps.
Peak summer. Hot and humid. Heat index (feels-like) can reach 35-38°C. Tourist crowds at maximum. AC essential in apartments. Locals begin leaving for coastal resorts.
Hottest month. Humidity peaks. Oppressive at midday in the city interior. Coastal breezes make Bosphorus-side neighbourhoods more bearable. August exodus: many Istanbulites leave.
Transition month. Noticeably cooler by mid-September. Still warm and sunny. Crowds thinning. One of the best months in Istanbul — summer warmth without peak heat.
Beaches Near Istanbul
The Bosphorus itself is not suitable for swimming (strong currents, boat traffic, pollution). Swimming options require travel from the city.
Kilyos (Black Sea)
45 min from city centre — Wild, long sandy beach
Rough waves — strong undercurrents. Good for body surfing but take care. Beach clubs and restaurants available.
Transport: Minibus from Sariyer
Sile (Black Sea)
1 hour from Asian side — Quieter coastal town with beaches
Popular with Asian-side Istanbul residents. Small waterfall, historic lighthouse. Less crowded than Kilyos.
Transport: Bus from Uskudar
Princes Islands (Adalar)
90 min by ferry from Eminonu — Small island beaches, pebble/sand
Beautiful escape from the city. No motor vehicles on islands. Swimming coves around Buyukada and Heybeliada. Very crowded on weekends.
Transport: IETT ferry
Florya (Marmara Sea)
25 min from Fatih — Urban beach complex
Closer but more polluted Marmara coast. Beach clubs with facilities. Not for natural beach experience.
Transport: Metro + walking
How to Survive Istanbul Summer
AC in apartments
Modern Istanbul apartments (built post-2005) almost universally have split-type AC units. Check before renting. Running AC costs €20–40/month more on your electricity bill in summer.
Timing your movement
Avoid being outside between 12pm and 4pm in July-August. Early morning (before 10am) and evenings (after 6pm) are when the city is liveable. Remote workers have a huge advantage here.
Bosphorus neighbourhoods
Beykoz, Arnavutkoy, Bebek, Yenikoy on the European shore all benefit from Bosphorus breezes that can make them 3-5°C cooler than inland districts. Worth the premium in summer.
Hammam and pool visits
Public hammams (Turkish baths) are air-conditioned waiting areas. Hotel pools are open to non-guests (day pass €15-30). Air-conditioned shopping malls become social spaces in peak heat.
Electric fan + evaporative cooling
A small USB desk fan pointed at a wet towel provides surprising cooling for very little cost. Useful as a backup when AC units in older apartments struggle.
Escaping Istanbul in August
Many expats follow locals and leave Istanbul in August — Antalya coast, Aegean islands or home visits. Rents can be sublet short-term. The city emptying actually makes remaining quieter and cheaper.
Summer vs Winter Cost Changes
| Cost Item | Summer | Winter | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC electricity surcharge | +€20–40/month | None | Cooling is the main extra cost in summer |
| Restaurant prices | Higher (tourist season) | Lower | Tourist restaurants increase prices June-September |
| Day trip beach transport | €5–15 return | N/A | Ferries to islands increase frequency and sometimes price |
| Hotel / short-term rent | +50–100% premium | Baseline | Summer demand from tourists drives up short-stay prices |
| Activities (tours, etc) | Higher demand | Lower | Peak-season Bosphorus tours etc. are more expensive |
