Quick Answer
Which parts of Turkey get the most rain?
The Black Sea coast (Trabzon, Rize) is the wettest region — rain year-round, over 800mm annually. Paradoxically, Antalya also has high annual rainfall (~1,080mm) but almost all falls in winter, making it one of the driest places in Turkey during summer. Bodrum and Izmir are the driest overall for expat purposes — low winter rain and bone-dry summers. Istanbul gets moderate rain spread across autumn, winter and spring.

Practical Implications for Expats
Do I need an umbrella in Turkey?
Depends entirely on where and when. In Antalya or Bodrum from May to October — you can leave your umbrella at home for months. In Istanbul in October or March — definitely carry one. In Trabzon — always.
Are roads dangerous in rain?
The first heavy rain of the season (typically October-November) causes accidents in coastal cities because roads are slick and drivers are not adjusted. Heavy downpours in Mediterranean winter can briefly flood underpasses. Flash floods in river valleys are a risk — avoid camping in dry riverbeds (wadis) in winter months.
When are outdoor festivals and events?
Turkey's outdoor event calendar runs April-October. Summer festivals, beach concerts and open-air markets are concentrated in this window. Winter outdoor events exist but are weather-dependent.
Can I plan a beach holiday in winter?
The Antalya/Fethiye coast is very much a winter destination for expats who value the quietness and lower costs. You will not swim, but outdoor cafe life, hiking and day trips are fully viable November-March.
