Ikamet & Residence Permits
Missed your Turkish residence permit appointment? Here is exactly what happens to your application, how to rebook quickly, the risk if your permit expires, and how to document emergencies.
Quick Answer
Missing your ikamet appointment does not cancel your application — it only loses the time slot. You can rebook through e-ikamet immediately. The serious risk is if your current permit expires before you can rebook and attend a new appointment, which creates unlawful stay status.
The e-ikamet appointment system is straightforward: if you do not appear at your scheduled appointment, the slot is automatically released back into the booking pool for other applicants. Your application file in the DGMM system remains intact.
Nothing catastrophic happens automatically. There is no penalty fine, no application cancellation notice, and no blackmark on your record for a missed appointment alone. The problem is purely procedural: you need an appointment to submit your documents, and without submitting documents, your application does not progress.
The urgency of the situation depends entirely on one factor: how much time is left before your current permit expires.
| Time Until Permit Expires | Urgency | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| More than 60 days | Low | Rebook at your convenience — plenty of time |
| 30–60 days | Medium | Rebook immediately; check for earliest available slot |
| 15–30 days | High | Rebook urgently; check daily for cancellations; consider visiting the office in person to explain |
| Under 15 days | Very High | Contact İl Göç İdaresi directly; explain situation; seek emergency appointment; consult lawyer |
| Permit already expired | Critical | Immediate legal advice needed; overstay risk; options limited |
Log back into e-ikamet
Go to e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr and log in with your existing credentials. Your application should still be listed in your account under "My Applications."
Find your application
Locate your pending application. Check that the application reference number is still active. If you see an option to schedule an appointment, proceed directly.
Select appointment time
Choose your nearest İl Göç İdaresi and look for available slots. In busy cities, check multiple days and times. Slots can appear throughout the day as others cancel.
Confirm and prepare documents
Once booked, immediately prepare your complete document package. Do not miss this appointment — gather everything before the date, not on the day.
Check for cancellation openings daily
In high-demand cities where appointment availability is limited, check the portal daily (and multiple times a day). Cancelled slots are released in real time and can disappear within minutes.
If your permit is about to expire and no appointments are available, you face an unlawful stay risk. In this case: (1) Document your attempts to book — screenshot the e-ikamet portal showing no available slots. (2) Visit the İl Göç İdaresi in person with all your documents. Explain the situation. Some offices will accommodate urgent cases. (3) Engage an immigration lawyer that day — they may have connections or know of emergency procedures. (4) Consider whether voluntary departure and reapplication is preferable to an unlawful stay record.
If your appointment was missed due to a medical emergency, serious accident, or other documented crisis, gather all supporting documentation immediately:
Bring this documentation to your next appointment and, if any unlawful stay period resulted from the gap, to any administrative review of your case. DGMM officers have discretion to consider documented exceptional circumstances.
What happens if I miss my ikamet appointment in Turkey?
Missing your ikamet appointment means your application process does not advance. Your DGMM appointment slot is released back into the system. You need to rebook a new appointment through the e-ikamet portal. Critically: if you miss your appointment and your current permit expires before you can rebook and attend, you will have a period of unlawful stay. The application itself is not cancelled, but the appointment booking is.
Can I reschedule a missed ikamet appointment?
Yes. You can log back into the e-ikamet portal and book a new appointment slot. Your existing application record remains active. The rebooking process is the same as the original booking. The main risk is the time it takes to get a new slot — in peak-season cities, this can mean weeks.
Does missing my appointment cancel my application?
No — missing an appointment does not cancel your application file in the DGMM system. Your application reference number remains valid. What is lost is the appointment time slot. You must rebook an appointment to submit your documents. Some expats have reported that after a missed appointment, their application reference number needs to be renewed if it has been inactive for an extended period — check this on e-ikamet.
What if my permit expires before I can get a new appointment after missing one?
This is the critical risk. If your original permit expires and you have not yet attended an appointment, you are technically in an unlawful stay period. As long as your original application was submitted (i.e., you have an application reference number from the e-ikamet system), you may still have some protection under the pending application principle — but this is weaker than having attended an appointment. Consult a lawyer if this happens.
How do I rebook an ikamet appointment in Turkey?
Log into e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr with your existing application credentials. Your application should still be in the system. Navigate to the appointment booking section and select a new available slot at your nearest İl Göç İdaresi. In high-demand cities, check daily — cancellations create new slots throughout the day.
Can I attend the appointment on a different date without rebooking?
No. Turkish immigration offices strictly enforce appointments. Arriving at a different date without a valid appointment will result in you being turned away. You must have a confirmed appointment slot to be seen. Walk-in requests are generally not accommodated at İl Göç İdaresi offices.
What if I had an emergency that prevented me from attending?
If you had a genuine emergency (hospitalisation, accident, serious illness), document it thoroughly (hospital records, doctor certificates). When you rebook and attend your new appointment, bring this documentation. It can support an explanation for the delay and any gap in your permit status. In extreme cases, an immigration lawyer can use documented emergencies to support an exception or appeal.
Is there a penalty for missing an ikamet appointment?
There is no direct fine for missing an appointment itself. The consequence is indirect: loss of the appointment slot, delay in your application, and — if your permit expires during the delay — potential unlawful stay status and its associated risks (overstay fine, complications with future renewals).
