Visas & Entry Rules
Dual nationals entering Turkey need to know which passport to use, why entry-exit consistency matters, and what happens when your ikamet is linked to one passport but you travel on another.
Quick Answer
You can enter Turkey with either passport, but you must use the same passport to exit that you used to enter. Turkish citizens must always use their Turkish passport at Turkish borders. Your ikamet is tied to the passport number used when it was issued — if you renew your passport, you must update your ikamet records.
Turkey's immigration system records every entry and exit by passport number. When you arrive, your passport number is logged. When you leave, the system matches your exit stamp to your entry record.
If you enter on Passport A and exit on Passport B (a different passport number), the system shows an open entry record for Passport A — effectively flagging you as having not departed. This can trigger overstay alerts, complicate future entries, and cause administrative headaches.
Always enter and exit Turkey on the same passport for each trip. If you decide to switch which passport you use for Turkey on future trips, start fresh — enter on the new passport and exit on that same passport. Never mix passports within a single trip.
| Scenario | Recommended Passport | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| EU/US/UK national visiting Turkey for holiday | Home country passport | Visa-free; no advantage to using other passport |
| Turkish national with foreign second passport | Turkish passport | Turkish law requires Turkish passport at Turkish borders |
| Dual national living in Turkey with ikamet | Passport used when ikamet was issued | Ikamet is linked to that passport number |
| Dual national seeking new ikamet | Whichever passport offers better conditions | Then use that passport consistently |
| Person whose passport has expired | New/renewed passport | Update ikamet records immediately after passport renewal |
Turkey recognises dual nationality in practice for most combinations, though the Turkish government officially discourages it in certain contexts. Turkish citizens are required under Turkish law to use their Turkish passport at Turkish border crossings.
This means: if you are a Turkish-German dual national, you must enter and exit Turkey on your Turkish passport. You cannot present your German passport at Turkish border control even if you have it with you.
Once inside Turkey, you can use either document for domestic purposes. For travel to Germany or Schengen countries, use your German passport. At Turkish border control, always use Turkish.
Your ikamet (residence permit) card is issued against a specific passport number. The DGMM database links your permit to that document. When you present at a Turkish border crossing, the system cross-references the passport presented with your ikamet record.
If you present a different passport (with a different number) than the one your ikamet was issued on, the system may not recognise your resident status — you could be processed as a tourist visitor rather than a resident, or questioned about the discrepancy.
Best practice: one passport for Turkey
Pick one passport to use for all Turkey interactions: entry, exit, ikamet application, and renewals. Stick with it. Only switch if you have a strong reason (e.g., you get a better second citizenship) and formally update all records when switching.
Passports expire — usually every 10 years for adults. When your passport is renewed, you receive a new document with a new passport number. Your old ikamet record still references your old passport number.
Get your new passport
Renew through your country's embassy or consulate in Turkey, or at home if you are visiting. Do this well before the old passport expires.
Notify immigration directorate
Visit your İl Göç İdaresi with old passport, new passport, and current ikamet card. Inform them of the passport change. They will update your DGMM record to link your ikamet to the new passport number.
Get ikamet reissued if needed
Some provinces reissue the ikamet card with the new passport details; others simply update the database record. Ask your directorate which procedure they follow.
Use new passport consistently going forward
Travel in and out of Turkey on the new passport. Ensure the ikamet update is completed before your first cross-border trip after renewal.
Can I enter Turkey with two passports?
Yes, holding two passports is legal for nationals of most dual-citizenship countries. You can choose which passport to use for Turkish entry depending on which provides better visa conditions. However, you should be consistent — if you enter on one passport, you should exit on the same passport to avoid stamp discrepancies in Turkey's system.
Which passport should I use to enter Turkey?
Use the passport that gives you the best visa conditions for Turkey. For most European, North American, and Australian nationals, their home country passport already provides visa-free entry. Turkish dual nationals (Turkish + another country) entering Turkey should use their Turkish passport — Turkey requires its citizens to use the Turkish passport at Turkish borders.
Can I enter Turkey on one passport and exit on another?
This creates a serious discrepancy in Turkey's immigration system. The entry record is tied to the passport used at entry. If you exit on a different passport number, the system shows no exit for your entry record, which can create problems including flags for overstay. Enter and exit on the same passport for each trip.
I am a Turkish citizen with a second foreign passport — which do I use?
Turkish law requires Turkish citizens to enter and exit Turkey using their Turkish passport. Using only a foreign passport to enter/exit Turkey as a Turkish citizen is not permitted. If you are naturalized Turkish and hold a second passport, you should always use the Turkish document at Turkish borders.
Can I use my Turkish residence permit card as an entry document?
No. The ikamet card is not a travel document. You must enter Turkey on a valid passport. The ikamet card is for identification and residency purposes inside Turkey only.
What happens if my two passports have different names or slightly different details?
Name discrepancies (e.g., different transliterations, middle names) between passports can cause issues at immigration. Carry documentation explaining any differences (name change certificate, marriage certificate). Border officers have discretion and may question inconsistencies.
I have a residence permit on one passport — what if I renew my passport?
Your ikamet is linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport and get a new number, you must notify the immigration directorate and update your records. Your ikamet card itself may need to be reissued with the new passport details. Do not let your passport expire without addressing this before a border crossing.
Can I apply for a Turkish residence permit using a second passport that has better visa conditions?
Yes. If you hold dual nationality, you can apply for a Turkish residence permit using whichever passport you choose. The ikamet will be issued against that passport number. It is often advisable to use the same passport you used to enter Turkey, to ensure consistent records.
