Visa & Permits

Turkey e-Visa vs Residence
Permit — Which Do You Need?

Two completely different documents that serve completely different purposes. Here's the clear breakdown for anyone planning to move to or stay long-term in Turkey.

Quick Answer

The e-Visa allows entry to Turkey for up to 90 days as a tourist. A residence permit (ikamet) is a separate document that allows you to legally live in Turkey long-term. You cannot use an e-Visa as a substitute for a residence permit.

When Do You Need an e-Visa?

If your nationality requires a visa to enter Turkey but qualifies for the e-Visa programme, you must obtain one before arrival. The e-Visa is valid for entry for a set period (usually 3–6 months), and allows stays of up to 90 days within that window.

Many Western nationalities (EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia) can enter Turkey visa-free without an e-Visa. Check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for your specific country.

When Do You Need a Residence Permit?

You need a residence permit (ikamet) if you plan to stay in Turkey for more than 90 days, or if you want access to Turkish services such as a bank account, Turkish SIM card, and local health insurance. Without a residence permit, your legal basis to remain in Turkey expires after 90 days.

Can You Switch From e-Visa to Residence Permit While in Turkey?

Yes — and this is the standard process. You enter Turkey on an e-Visa or visa-free, then apply for a residence permit through the e-ikamet portal while still in Turkey. You must apply before your 90 days or your visa expiry date (whichever comes first).
