Climate & Weather
Turkey's Mediterranean and Aegean coasts offer some of Europe's warmest, sunniest climates. These 5 cities are ranked for year-round warmth, sunshine hours, and sea swimming season length.
Quick Answer
Which Turkish city has the best year-round warm weather?
Mersin has the highest sunshine hours and warmest January temperatures in Turkey. Alanya is the most popular choice among expats for warm winters and a long beach season. Antalya is close behind and offers better infrastructure. All five cities on this list offer winter averages well above the European norm.

Alanya has the warmest winters on Turkey's Mediterranean coast and one of the longest sea swimming seasons in Europe. January average highs of 13–15°C mean it rarely gets truly cold. Summer is hot (34–38°C July/August) but the sea breeze keeps it tolerable. It's genuinely possible to sit in a t-shirt on the beach terrace in December and January.

Antalya has virtually identical climate credentials to Alanya — warm winters, long hot summers, and 300 days of sunshine. The city's position between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean creates a microclimate that keeps temperatures moderate. Summer brings intense heat but the coastal location means sea breezes provide relief. Rain is concentrated in winter months.

Bodrum's Aegean location gives it hot, dry summers and mild winters. The peninsula experiences strong Meltemi winds in summer that keep temperatures more comfortable than the Eastern Mediterranean. Winters are gentle — frost is virtually unknown. The climate is often described as ideal by residents: warm enough for outdoor living 10+ months per year without being oppressive.

Shorter sea swimming season than Mediterranean; rainy winters (Nov–Feb)

Fethiye benefits from an outstanding climate — warm winters, long hot summers, and the spectacular light that makes the Turquoise Coast so photogenic. The mountains behind the town create rain shadows in some microlocations. Summer is hot but the combination of mountain breezes and coastal location keeps it manageable. The famous Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz is a warm, sheltered swimming spot.

Mersin is often overlooked but has arguably the best year-round climate in Turkey. The easternmost major city on the Mediterranean coast, it has warmer winters than Antalya and Alanya, the most annual sunshine hours, and a very long swimming season. Summer heat is significant but the city is on the coast. For pure weather statistics, Mersin is Turkey's warmest and sunniest city.

Watch out for
Small expat community; less scenic than Antalya or Fethiye
Snow is virtually unknown on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Antalya, Alanya, Fethiye, and Bodrum can see cold rain in January and February but temperatures rarely fall below 5°C and snow is a once-in-a-decade event. Istanbul gets snow 3–5 days per year and it lies briefly. Ankara and inland cities get proper snow.
July and August on the Eastern Mediterranean coast (Alanya, Mersin) regularly sees 35–40°C. For Northern Europeans accustomed to cooler climates, this requires adjustment. Most expats adapt by adopting a Mediterranean schedule: active in the morning, rest or air-conditioned indoor time in the afternoon, outdoor activity in the evening. Air conditioning is standard in apartments.
Mersin averages the most sunshine hours annually — around 320 days. Antalya and Alanya are close behind at 300–310 days. These are among the highest sunshine figures in all of Europe.
On the Eastern Mediterranean (Alanya, Mersin) the sea stays around 17–19°C in November and December — cold but swimmable for the hardy. By January it drops to 16–17°C. Most people consider the sea comfortable from April (20°C+) through November (21°C). The Aegean cools faster in autumn.
