City Comparisons
Three of Turkey's most popular expat cities sit on the same Mediterranean coast — but they offer very different lifestyles, costs, and trade-offs. Here's how they compare across 10 key factors.
Quick Answer
Antalya, Fethiye, or Alanya — which should you choose?
Antalya wins on infrastructure, healthcare, and connectivity — it's a proper city. Fethiye wins on British community and scenery. Alanya wins on cost, warm sea, and golden sand. The single most important question is: do you have medical needs? If yes, Antalya is the clear choice.
| Factor | Antalya | Fethiye | Alanya |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly budget (1 person) | €900–1,400 | €800–1,300 | €700–1,100 |
| 1BR rent (centre) | €350–650 | €300–550 | €200–400 |
| Healthcare | Excellent — major private hospitals | Moderate — basic private; serious cases to Antalya | Basic — serious cases to Antalya (1.5h) |
| International schools | Yes — TED, QSI | Limited | None |
| Airport | Antalya (AYT) — 100+ routes | Dalaman (DLM) — seasonal/limited | Gazipasa (GZP) — very limited; or Antalya 2h |
| Expat community | 80,000+ — very diverse | 10–15k — British-dominant | 20–30k — Scandinavian-dominant |
| Beach quality | Konyaaltı (shingle) + Lara (sand) — good | Çalış (shingle) + Ölüdeniz (spectacular) — excellent | Cleopatra Beach (golden sand) — excellent |
| City size / infrastructure | Large city (2.5m) — full services | Small town (~200k) — limited | Small resort (~400k) — moderate |
| Pace of life | City pace — busy, traffic, options | Relaxed village-town feel | Resort town — relaxed, seasonal |
| Property prices (buy) | €1,200–3,000/m² | €800–2,000/m² | €600–1,500/m² |
For British expats specifically, Fethiye has a stronger and more established British community culture — pubs, social clubs, charity events, English-language services are deeply embedded. Antalya has more British expats in absolute numbers but they're more diffuse. Fethiye feels more "British" as a town; Antalya is more diverse and cosmopolitan.
Alanya is consistently the cheapest. Monthly costs are typically 20–30% lower than Antalya and 10–20% lower than Fethiye for comparable lifestyles. Property prices in Alanya are also dramatically cheaper than Antalya. For budget-first expats, Alanya wins clearly.
For routine and primary care — GP visits, dental, minor procedures — both Fethiye and Alanya have adequate private clinics. For specialist care, major surgery, or serious emergencies, both require travel to Antalya (1.5–2 hours for Alanya; 45 minutes for Fethiye to Antalya by motorway). This is a real consideration for older residents or those with ongoing health needs.
