Quick Answer
Turkish toll motorways and bridges are HGS-only — there is no cash payment. Get an HGS sticker tag at any PTT post office or Ziraat Bank (requires passport and Turkish tax number). Register it to your vehicle plate and top up with credit before driving. Driving without HGS triggers automatic fines of 5x the original toll.
How to Get HGS: Step-by-Step
Get your Turkish tax number
Required to register an HGS account. Get it at any Vergi Dairesi with your passport. Takes 15 minutes.
Choose HGS or OGS
HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi): windscreen sticker tag — cheaper, more widely accepted. OGS (Otomatik Geçiş Sistemi): dedicated transponder for frequent drivers on specific routes. Most expats use HGS.
Purchase HGS tag at PTT office or bank
HGS tags can be purchased at any PTT (post office), Ziraat Bank, or Vakıfbank. Alternatively, purchase online if you have a Turkish bank account. Tag costs approximately ₺50–100.
Register the tag to your vehicle
Link the HGS tag to your vehicle plate number. You can do this at the PTT/bank counter or via e-devlet if you have an account. This is required — a tag without vehicle registration does not work.
Top up balance
Add credit to your HGS account: at PTT offices, Ziraat Bank/Vakıfbank branches, via ATM using your Turkish bank card, or via the KGM (Karayolları) website. Minimum top-up is typically ₺100.
Stick the tag to your windscreen
Place the HGS sticker on the upper inner centre of the windscreen (as instructed — must be in the correct zone for antenna reading). The toll gantry reads the tag automatically as you pass through.
Major Toll Routes and Costs

Journey approx 450km; multiple toll gantries; fastest route between the two cities.

What Happens if You Drive Without HGS
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need HGS to drive on Turkish motorways?
Yes. Turkish toll motorways (otoyol) and bridges are HGS-only — there is no cash payment option at most toll points. You need an HGS sticker tag registered to your vehicle plate. Driving through without one triggers an automatic fine of 5x the original toll amount, sent to your vehicle's registered address.
How do I get an HGS tag as a foreigner in Turkey?
Visit any PTT (post office) branch or Ziraat Bank/Vakıfbank. You need your passport, Turkish tax number, and vehicle registration documents. The HGS tag costs ₺50–100 and must be registered to your specific vehicle plate. Top up the balance before use.
How much are tolls in Turkey?
Individual toll gantries charge ₺15–80 per passage for cars. The Osmangazi Bridge (İzmit Bay) is the most expensive single toll at ₺200–230. A full Istanbul-to-Ankara motorway journey (450km) costs approximately ₺150–250 in tolls. Istanbul Bosphorus bridge crossings cost ₺40–80 each.
Can I drive without HGS on normal roads?
Yes. Non-motorway national highways (Devlet Yolu, D- routes) are free and do not require HGS. You can travel throughout Turkey without HGS on free roads — you only need it for toll motorways (O- prefix) and bridges/tunnels.
What happens if I drive through a toll without paying?
Your licence plate is photographed automatically. A fine of 5x the original toll is generated and sent to the vehicle's registered address. For foreign-registered vehicles, enforcement depends on your home country's reciprocal agreements with Turkey. Most EU countries now exchange traffic enforcement information with Turkey.
How do I top up HGS balance?
HGS balance can be topped up at: PTT offices (most convenient), Ziraat Bank or Vakıfbank branches/ATMs, the KGM (Karayolları) website with a Turkish bank card, or via the e-devlet portal if you have a Turkish government ID account. Some third-party apps also allow top-up. Minimum top-up is typically ₺100.
Do I need HGS if I am driving a rental car in Turkey?
Rental cars in Turkey should have HGS pre-installed and the cost of tolls charged to your rental agreement (either billed through the rental company or deducted from a deposit). Confirm this with your rental company before taking the car. Do not assume the car has a working HGS tag — ask to see it and check the balance.
