Visa vs Mastercard vs Troy

Turkey has its own domestic card network — Troy. Here's what you need to know.

Recommendation for expats: Always request a Visa or Mastercard. Troy cards are domestic-only and won't work abroad. Some banks issue debit cards with both Troy and Visa branding — this works internationally on Visa but may be issued by default as Troy-only at some branches. Specifically request a Visa or Mastercard debit card.

ATM Guide for Expats

Using Your Turkish Bank Card

  • Free at your own bank's ATMs
  • Free at most other Turkish bank ATMs (BKM network)
  • Daily limit: ₺10,000–₺50,000 depending on card
  • 24/7 availability in major cities

Using a Foreign Card in Turkey

  • ! Foreign card fee: typically 3–5% + fixed fee
  • Always choose TRY — decline DCC (dynamic currency conversion)
  • Wise card: 2 free withdrawals/month up to €200
  • Revolut: free withdrawals up to monthly limit

DCC Warning: Turkish ATMs frequently offer to convert to your home currency — always decline this and choose TRY. Dynamic Currency Conversion rates are typically 3–7% worse than your card's exchange rate.

The Taksit System — Turkey's Instalment Culture

One of the most expat-friendly aspects of Turkish banking: interest-free instalments on almost everything.

How it Works

At checkout, tell the cashier how many instalments you want (3, 6, 9 or 12). The total is divided equally. No interest charged to you.

Who Pays?

The merchant pays the financing cost to the bank (typically 1–3%). This is built into retail prices — you don't pay extra.

Minimum Amount

Typically ₺1,000–₺2,000 minimum for instalment eligibility. Works at most Turkish retailers, restaurants and service providers.

Example: You buy a laptop for ₺25,000 at an electronics store. You choose 12 taksit. Your card is charged ₺2,083.33 per month for 12 months — no interest, no fees. This is one of the key reasons many expats prioritise getting a Turkish credit card.

Online Shopping in Turkey

Turkish e-commerce has its own infrastructure. Here's what expats need to know.

3D Secure

All Turkish banks use 3D Secure for online transactions. You'll receive an SMS code to your registered Turkish phone number. Ensure your Turkish SIM is registered to your account.

iyzico & PayTR

Turkey's dominant payment gateways. Your Turkish bank card works seamlessly. Foreign cards work on international sites but may fail on Turkish-only payment systems.

BKM Express

Turkey's one-click checkout system. Register your Turkish bank card once, then check out with just your phone number on BKM Express-enabled Turkish sites. Extremely convenient.
