Expat Guide to Marmaris
Marmaris is one of Turkey's most beautiful coastal towns — a stunning natural harbour, pine-covered hills, and a relaxed expat scene away from the crowds of Bodrum and Fethiye.
Quick Answer
Marmaris is an excellent choice for expats who want a beautiful, affordable coastal town with a genuine Turkish character — without the mass tourism overload of peak Bodrum or the British-heavy feel of Fethiye. Winter is very quiet but mild and peaceful.

Set at the junction of two seas — the Aegean and Mediterranean — Marmaris is known for its dramatic natural harbour, crystal-clear water, and backdrop of pine forests. The town has a lively marina, a well-preserved old bazaar, and a long promenade (kordon) lined with cafés and restaurants.
Unlike Fethiye, Marmaris has a stronger Turkish character outside the tourist strips. Year-round residents enjoy a genuine local life while the town empties significantly from October to April.
Monthly Budget in Marmaris
Marmaris has a state hospital and several private clinics and medical centres. For serious procedures or specialist care, residents generally go to Muğla (45 min) or Fethiye (90 min). Private health insurance is essential and affordable (€35–80/month).
Marmaris has a smaller but established expat community, primarily British and Scandinavian. Facebook groups like "Marmaris Expats" are active and helpful. There are English-speaking estate agents, lawyers, and accountants. The community is notably close-knit compared to larger expat hubs.
