Real broadband speeds by neighbourhood, ISP comparisons, 4G/5G mobile coverage, and how to check if your rental address has fibre before you sign a lease. Updated 2026.
Speed Breakdown
Istanbul's internet infrastructure has improved dramatically in the past five years. Fibre rollout across central districts means most expats can access genuine gigabit-capable connections at reasonable prices.
Avoid if possible. Adequate for basic browsing but insufficient for video calls or large file transfers.
Workable for most remote tasks. Video calls functional. Not ideal for 4K streaming or large uploads.
Ideal for all remote work. More than adequate for 4K video calls, cloud backup, and heavy downloads simultaneously.
Excellent backup and mobile working solution. Turkcell leads reliability across all Istanbul districts.
Before signing any Istanbul rental contract, verify what broadband is available at that specific address. Istanbul's infrastructure varies dramatically building by building, especially in older districts.
Visit isyeri.turktelekom.com.tr and enter the full address. This shows what ADSL/VDSL/Fibre services are available at that exact building from the state provider.
Visit turkcell.com.tr/superonline and use the address checker. Superonline's fibre network has excellent central Istanbul coverage but gaps in outer suburbs.
Ask "Bu adreste fiber internet var mı?" (Is there fibre internet at this address?). Most landlords know — or ask existing tenants if you can.
If moving into a furnished flat with existing internet, run a Speedtest.net test before signing. You want to see actual speeds, not just theoretical package speeds.
By Area
Speed ranges represent typical real-world performance on available connections. Actual speeds may vary by building, provider, and time of day.
| Neighbourhood | Fixed Broadband | 4G Mobile | Fibre Availability | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beşiktaş / Levent | 150–400 Mbps | 40–60 Mbps | Excellent | Fastest | Business district infrastructure. Fibre widely deployed, multiple ISP competition keeps speeds high. |
| Kadıköy | 100–300 Mbps | 35–55 Mbps | Excellent | Excellent | Densely cabled district. Superonline and Türk Telekom fibre both widely available. Fastest on Asian side. |
| Şişli / Nişantaşı | 100–300 Mbps | 35–50 Mbps | Excellent | Excellent | Central European side, strong infrastructure. VDSL widely replaced by fibre in recent years. |
| Ataşehir | 100–250 Mbps | 30–50 Mbps | Very Good | Very Good | Newer district with modern cabling infrastructure. Fibre rollout nearly complete. |
| Sarıyer | 80–200 Mbps | 25–45 Mbps | Good | Good | Improving rapidly. Central Sarıyer has fibre; outer villages remain on VDSL or ADSL in some pockets. |
| Fatih / Sultanahmet | 50–150 Mbps | 25–40 Mbps | Moderate | Moderate | Historic district — older infrastructure in some buildings. New buildings better served. Fibre expanding. |
| Esenyurt | 30–100 Mbps | 20–35 Mbps | Patchy | Variable | Outer suburb with mixed infrastructure. Some new apartment blocks have fibre; older stock is ADSL/VDSL. |
| Outer Suburbs | 10–50 Mbps | 15–30 Mbps | Limited | Variable | Significant variation. Always check specific address before committing to a rental in outer areas. |
Provider Comparison
Three major providers dominate Istanbul's residential broadband market. Here's how they compare for expats choosing a home internet package.
State-owned incumbent
40 Mbps (VDSL) / 200 Mbps (fibre)
Nationwide — widest coverage of any ISP
€15–40/month
Pros: Largest network, available almost everywhere, reliable infrastructure
Cons: Slower to deploy fibre in competitive areas, customer service can be slow
Private (Turkcell subsidiary)
150 Mbps average across subscribers
Major cities — extensive Istanbul coverage
€20–45/month
Pros: Fastest average speeds, aggressive fibre rollout, competitive pricing
Cons: Coverage gaps in outer suburbs and rural areas
Private (Vodafone Turkey)
100 Mbps average
Good in Istanbul, particularly European side
€18–40/month
Pros: Bundled mobile + home deals, solid reliability, good customer service in English
Cons: Less competitive on price vs Superonline, coverage gaps on Asian side
Mobile Data
Istanbul's three mobile operators — Turkcell, Vodafone, and Türk Telekom — all provide good 4G coverage across the city. 5G is expanding in central districts.
40–60 Mbps avg
Yes — Beşiktaş, Şişli, Levent, parts of Kadıköy
Best overall coverage
Consistent leader in independent speed tests. Best 5G rollout. Recommended for digital nomads.
35–50 Mbps avg
Yes — central districts expanding
Strong in central Istanbul
Close second to Turkcell in most areas. Better European-side coverage. Good value data bundles.
25–40 Mbps avg
Limited — expanding
Good, widest national reach
Slower average mobile speeds but widest overall coverage nationwide. Useful if you travel Turkey frequently.
Turkey blocks certain online services (Wikipedia was blocked 2017–2019; Twitter/X is occasionally throttled). Most expats use a VPN as standard. Check VPN compatibility with your home-country work systems before arriving. VPN use is legal in Turkey for individuals.
