English-Speaking Doctors in Turkey (2026)

Your complete guide to finding English-speaking doctors across Turkey — from Istanbul and Antalya to smaller expat towns, with tips for every specialty.

Quick Answer

Are there English-speaking doctors in Turkey?

Yes — especially in major cities and private hospitals. Istanbul and Antalya have excellent English-speaking medical teams at private hospitals, particularly at JCI-accredited facilities like Acibadem, Memorial, MedStar, and American Hospital. Izmir, Bodrum, and Fethiye have good availability. Smaller towns have more limited but growing English medical access. Public hospitals have very limited English but private clinics are the norm for most expats.

GP vs Specialist — How Routing Works in Turkey

Unlike the UK's NHS system, Turkey's private healthcare system does not require a GP referral to see a specialist. You can book directly with a cardiologist, dermatologist, or orthopedic surgeon without going through a family doctor first.

However, having a regular GP (aile hekimi or a private family doctor) is useful for managing ongoing care, coordinating lab results, and getting prescription renewals. Ask at any private hospital for their family medicine or internal medicine department to establish a relationship with a primary care doctor.

If you have SGK public insurance, you are assigned a specific aile hekimi (family doctor) in your registered district. But most expats use private clinics for all their care until they establish SGK eligibility.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

  • Arrive 15–20 minutes early to complete registration forms — bring passport and insurance card.
  • Private hospitals assign you a patient number on arrival. You will wait in a corridor or waiting room; Turkish hospitals do not typically use appointment rooms.
  • Doctors speak directly and efficiently — consultations are often shorter than in the UK or US. Don't be alarmed; you can ask follow-up questions.
  • You will receive printed prescriptions in Turkish. Take photos of any packaging and ask the pharmacist for English drug name equivalents.
  • Ask for copies of all test results, scans, and reports in both Turkish and English. Hospitals are generally accommodating of this request.
  • Payment is typically made before or after the consultation at a dedicated cashier desk — not to the doctor directly.
